Going Green for a Better Lifestyle

Going Green for a Better Lifestyle

ORLANDO, Fla. — If you want to add value to your home, consider “going green.” Investing in energy-saving, environmentally friendly features can reduce your monthly bills, enhance your lifestyle and make your home more attractive to future buyers.

Throughout Florida, home owners are adding more efficient cooling and heating systems, replacing leaky windows, planting shade trees, installing ceiling fans and other cost-saving features, according to members of Florida Realtors®. “I enjoy finding green homes for buyers and advising sellers on ways to make their homes more marketable,” says Rosie Hetman-Clemente, a Realtor with Watson Realty in Jacksonville, who retrofitted her home for better energy efficiency. “It’s part of being a good steward of the environment.”

Today, a Florida home’s “green” features may include:

• Solar heating and/or solar hot water

• Energy-efficient AC and heating systems

• Energy Star appliances that use less electricity

• Low-flow faucets and showerheads that save water

• Extra wall and attic insulation

• Airtight windows

• Natural lighting, such as sunroofs

• Overhanging shade trees

• Awnings that keep sun off windows

• Ceiling fans

• High indoor air quality

• A location near public transit services

• A walkable neighborhood

These green features can vary widely in terms of cost. For instance, you can do things like sealing and caulking the windows and adding weather stripping to the doors without spending a lot of money. Rebates for energy-saving appliances can help you pay for an upgrade. A Realtor can help you identify which green investments to your home make the most sense for today and tomorrow.

Florida Realtors®, formerly known as the Florida Association of Realtors®, serves as the voice for real estate in Florida. It provides programs, services, continuing education, research and legislative representation to its 115,000 members in 64 boards/associations.
